Why Georgioupolis is a smart base (not just pretty).
Georgioupolis sits almost exactly between Chania and Rethymno. That means many of Crete’s top sights are within easy reach. One AUTOWAY Car Rental gets you from beach to highlands with no transfers or schedules. AUTOWAY’s fleet and local support give confidence even on unusual roads.
Day-trip routes you must try.
One of the most scenic routes from Georgioupolis runs northwest toward the Gramvousa peninsula. Its turquoise lagoon and shipwreck make for iconic photos. AUTOWAY blog even maps the drive.

White Mountains:
Drive inland to Vamos, Argyroupoli springs, or Argyroupoli waterfalls. These villages deliver authentic Cretan life, natural springs, and stone houses.
Just 5–10 minutes south. Rent a pedal-boat (≈ 10–15 € / hour) and quietly scan the banks for turtles in the morning. Locals say it’s one of the rare places in Crete where you might glimpse them.
Thrills, culture, and hidden roads.
Take a full-day excursion across rugged terrain. You’ll visit olive presses, remote chapels, sample raki and honey, climb mountain passes, and see vultures overhead. The off-road bits are demanding but rewarding.
On the east side of the river, this more sheltered stretch is calmer and great for families.
If you cross the island southwards, stop at this local museum full of WWII artifacts.
For lighter hiking than Samaria. Starting from the south coast, it’s about 11 km long and less strenuous. If you drive to the trailhead, you can walk and then return by taxi or shuttle.
