A Green Haven at 680 Meters

Gerakari sits high at 680 m, tucked into the green folds of Mount Kedros. Water gushes from the mountain springs, and life flows with it. You’ll find everything you need here: taverns, cafés, supermarkets, even ATMs. The locals mostly farm the land, and their cherries are famous all over Crete. So are their apples, pears, quinces, and walnuts. It’s basically a fruit lover’s dream.
Before you head up, make sure you’ve read AUTOWAY’s guide on How it is to Drive in Crete. The mountain roads are scenic but twisty, and this short read will make your drive a breeze.

History Written in Fire

On August 22, 1944, Gerakari was burned to the ground by the Nazis. Forty-nine villagers were executed, and most churches destroyed. The village rose again from its ashes  today, a Venetian bell with carved reliefs survives in the Church of the Annunciation as a quiet reminder of that day.
To understand where Gerakari fits in Crete’s broader story, see AUTOWAY’s High-Level Overview of Crete; it connects the dots between landscapes, legends, and living history across the island.

Byzantine Corners & Closely Kept Villages

Just outside Gerakari, the 13th-century church of Agios Ioannis still keeps its frescoes intact. Nearby once stood the old Fotis settlement. Further south lies Gourgouthi  a nearly forgotten village worth visiting for its tiny cemetery church of Agios Ioannis and Agia Anna.
If you love discovering villages that most travelers miss, take a look at AUTOWAY’s Unseen Crete Villages  Gerakari could easily headline that list.
