Ierapetra by Car: Discover Crete’s Sunny South
  • Ierapetra is Europe’s southernmost town with warm seas and fewer crowds.
  • The region offers quiet beaches, mountain villages, and Minoan sites.
  • A rental car gives full access to Crete’s remote southern coast.

Ierapetra feels like a different Crete.

On the island’s southeast edge, this town faces the Libyan Sea. It’s the warmest spot in Greece, with sunshine almost year-round and waters swimmable into November. Less touristy than the north, Ierapetra blends local life with raw coastal beauty ,  ideal for travellers seeking quiet and space.

You need a car to get the full picture.

With a car rental, you can explore the 30 km coastline at your pace. Beaches like Achlia, Koutsounari, and Ferma sit in coves below the main road; no buses go there. The sea is calm, the crowds light, and the water often warmer than in northern Crete.

The area is rich in history and agriculture.

Ierapetra was a Minoan port and later a Venetian stronghold. The Kales Fortress still stands at the harbour. Inland, the plains are covered in greenhouses,  the town is Greece’s top exporter of tomatoes and cucumbers. Local olive oil tastings are common in harvest season (Oct–Dec).

Villages and gorges lie just beyond.

Drive to Myrtos or Anatoli for narrow lanes, sea views, and quiet cafés. Hike the nearby Ha Gorge, one of Crete’s most dramatic. Or visit Gournia, a well-preserved Minoan site just north of town.

Chrissi Island remains off-limits,  for now.
