Potatoes, raki, and patience. Find it here.
The star dish? Oftes patates slow-baked potatoes roasted in their skins. Only small, Cretan-grown ones make the cut. They’re cracked by hand, salted, and served hot with a glass of tsikoudia.
Around them come olives, rusks from Spili’s Papadakis bakery, and laughter. Giorgos used to bake a sack a day, washing it down with 25 kilos of raki. Simple food. Honest flavor. Endless stories.
Where Crete’s past still lives.
In the mountain village of Spili, south of Rethymno, one café refuses to change. Tou Rafti “O Raftis,” meaning “The Tailor” , opened in 1966 and still runs much the same.
Founded by tailor Giorgos Avgenakis, it began as both a sewing shop and a kafeneio. While stitching uniforms and Cretan trousers, Giorgos served coffee to locals. Soon, the sewing and sipping blended into one. The nickname stuck, and The Tailor’s Café was born.
A tailor with coffee on his sleeve.
Giorgos built the café’s famous vaulted oven himself. It has burned every day since the 1960s, a record of pure Cretan devotion. Between fittings and gossip, Giorgos baked potatoes in the coals, poured homemade raki, and listened.
The café became the village’s heart. Even after a bad accident and months in hospital, he returned to his stool, chatting and sewing as if time had stopped.
A living museum with a pulse.
Today, his son Vangelis runs the place and rarely leaves it. Tou Rafti looks exactly as it did decades ago: stone walls, oil lamps, faded ads, black-and-white photos, and the same Pfaff sewing machine. Locals play cards under the sound of Cretan songs.
Students come from Rethymno for a drink and a story. Some nights, the café bursts with laughter and “mantinades” the island’s witty improvised rhymes. Here, nothing feels staged. It’s as real as Crete gets.

Spili’s soul, stitched together.
While modern cafés chase trends, Tou Rafti stays true. It’s not a décor, it’s a memory. A rare place where Crete’s village life still breathes.
For travelers who crave authenticity, this is a must-stop on your Cretan road trip. Visit Spili, sip raki by the old oven, and let the island speak for itself.
