Kotsifos Gorge by AUTOWAY
- A narrow canyon south of Rethymno with cliffs, waterfalls, and a small roadside chapel. Easy to reach, easy to enjoy, no hiking boots needed.
Kotsifos Gorge – South Crete’s Drive-Through Canyon
Kotsifos Gorge cuts through the mountains between Kanevos and Sellia, just before you reach Plakias. The cliffs rise sharply on both sides, and small waterfalls run down even in dry months. It’s one of those routes where you slow down without meaning to.
Unlike Samaria Gorge which takes hours to cross, Kotsifos is short and direct. You can drive through it, stop at one of the pull-offs, and be back on the road in ten minutes. That’s the appeal: real landscape, zero logistics.
A small stone chapel built into the rock adds a local touch typical of the rural mountain roads in Crete. It’s worth a short stop, especially if you’re continuing toward Plakias Beach or Agios Pavlos later in the day.

Why Visit
The gorge gives a clear view of Crete’s southern geology, tall limestone walls, loose scree slopes, and plant life that somehow survives on rock. It’s quieter than Kourtaliotiko Gorge nearby, though both are part of the same fault line that divides the Rethymno region.
For a sense of contrast, you can combine the drive with a detour north toward Psiloritis Mountain. In under an hour you’ll go from coastal cliffs to Crete’s highest alpine ridge, a clear example of how quickly the island’s terrain shifts.

Getting There
The gorge is about 30 km south of Rethymno. Drive through the village of Kanevos, follow the signs for Sellia, and you’ll be inside the canyon within minutes. The road is narrow but paved. There are two small lay-bys where you can park safely for photos.
Pair it with a stop at Kourtaliotiko Gorge on the same route; it’s a straightforward, half-day loop that shows Crete’s wild interior without long hikes or crowds.
