Knossos

Begin your drive bright and early by visiting the famous Knossos Palace -one of the most iconic archaeological sites in Greece. Aim to arrive around 8:00 AM when the gates open to enjoy the labyrinthine ruins before tour buses roll in. Parking is straightforward near the site, but keep an eye out for narrow lanes and local traffic patterns.

Food time?

Taste tradition in Archanes, Crete’s hidden wine village. After soaking up ancient history, hop back into your AUTOWAY rental car and drive just 10 minutes south to Archanes. This colorful village is famed for its award-winning wines and Cretan cuisine. Road trip: Drive slowly through the village outskirts—goats and chickens have the right of way here!

Where to eat nearby: If you’re hungry after the beach and want to stay close, we personally recommend Olive & Mint in Skalani—a charming spot with excellent local dishes (note: we are not affiliated).

Returning to Rethymno? If you’re heading back west, consider a stop at Taverna Doxa in Heraklion, a cozy “kafeneio”-style tavern we personally love (again, not affiliated).

Ready to hit the road? Book your reliable ride today with AUTOWAY—top-rated, trusted, and serving travelers across Crete since 1986! Kickstart your day with a magical morning at Knossos Palace.

Want to dive deeper into culture?

You can always pay a visit to Myrtia and the Kazantzakis Museum. Only a 15-minute scenic drive from Archanes, Myrtia offers a unique cultural stop: the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum. Celebrate the life of Crete’s most beloved writer amid olive groves. Parking is free and plentiful by the museum. Take a few minutes to refill your water bottles at the natural spring just before you enter town -it’s cold, clean, and locals swear by its refreshing taste.

Feeling something more spiritual? Hit the mountain monastery detour. Consider a peaceful stop at the historic Agios Panteleimon Monastery, perched on a gentle mountain road just outside Myrtia. The drive is easy, but be cautious—sharp curves and stunning vistas may tempt you to pull over for photos. Always use designated pull-off points and be wary of the occasional shepherd leading his flock across the road!

Sunset time?

Wrap up your adventure with a sunset swim at Karteros or Amnissos Beach. After a full day of discovery, cruise down to the coast in about 20 minutes to unwind. Karteros and Amnissos beaches are laid-back and less crowded, perfect for a swim, a seaside coffee, or a simple seafood dinner. Both beaches offer easy parking, calm waters, and beautiful sunsets to close out your perfect Cretan road trip.
