What is Potamida and why is it worth a stop?
Potamida is a small, quiet village in western Crete, near Kissamos. What makes it stand out is the presence of the Komolithi – soft, clay-based hills that rise in bizarre, wave-like formations just outside the village. You won’t find crowds or ticket booths here. It’s a natural landscape, freely accessible, and unlike anything else in Crete.

How did the Komolithi hills form?
The hills are the result of erosion of soft clay deposits, likely from when this part of Crete was underwater millions of years ago. Over time, wind and rain carved the terrain into smooth, conical shapes. Some are just a few meters tall, others larger – all clustered together in an area you can easily walk around and photograph. The soil is dry and crumbly, especially in summer, so good shoes help.

Where is Potamida and how do you get there?
Potamida lies about 7 km south of Kissamos and just 35 minutes by car from Chania. The fastest route is via the main highway west from Chania, then a short drive inland from the coast. There are no organized tours or bus connections, so renting a car is essential. With a vehicle from AUTOWAY, you’ll have full Insurance, 24/7 support, and the flexibility to make the trip at your own pace.

What to expect when you arrive.
There’s no formal entrance or signage yet. You simply park by the road and walk a few steps to reach the clay hills. The area is quiet, usually empty, and free to access. Bring water, wear decent shoes, and allow about 30–45 minutes to explore. For a longer stop, the village has a few cafés where you can grab a coffee before or after your visit.

Potamida is part of the real, local Crete.
This isn’t a tourist hotspot. That’s what makes it valuable. Visiting the Komolithi lets you experience a local Crete that group tours miss. It’s also the kind of stop that fits easily into a day trip, especially if you’re already heading to Falassarna, Elafonissi, or Kissamos. Driving yourself is the only way to include Potamida without sacrificing time or convenience.
