Tolls are coming; now’s the time to drive Crete.
Big changes are on the way for Crete’s motorway. From 2025, tolls will be introduced on parts of the island’s main road, the A90. The goal is to improve safety and cut travel time. But if you’re planning a road trip, it’s smart to go before these new charges take effect.
Good news, many routes stay free.
Not all roads will cost you. The drive from Heraklion to Hersonissos and onward to Agios Nikolaos will remain toll-free. These are some of Crete’s most popular coastal routes, full of beaches, tavernas, and sea views. Take advantage while it lasts.
New road, MUCH safer, but at a price.
The motorway upgrade will stretch across the island, from Kissamos to Sitia. The section between Chania and Heraklion will cost around €8.80. Tolls will be added step-by-step as construction finishes. The full project is expected by 2031.
