A historic fortress overlooking Souda Bay.
Aptera Fortress stands on a hill about 170 meters above sea level, near the ancient city of Aptera. It’s located just 12 km east of Chania, in the region of Souda-easy to reach by car with a short scenic drive from the city.
Built for control, designed for defense.
The fortress was constructed in 1868 by Ottoman commander Hussein Avni Pasha. It was part of a strategic plan following the Cretan Revolution of 1866. Its main purpose was to secure the Apokoronas region and support the nearby Itzadin Fortress, helping the Ottomans maintain control over the vital harbor of Souda.
The structure still stands strong.
Despite its age, Aptera Fortress is in relatively good condition. You can still walk its sturdy walls and take in commanding views over the bay and surrounding countryside. Its design reflects typical Ottoman military architecture of the late 19th century-simple, functional, and fortified.
