Start your morning hiking through Richtis Gorge.

Located near Exo Mouliana in eastern Crete, Richtis Gorge is a scenic 3-4 km trail that runs from a stone-arched bridge down to Richtis Waterfall, then continues to a quiet beach. The hike takes around 2.5–3 hours round-trip and features a mix of shaded forest, wild herbs, old aqueducts, and a mid-trail waterfall perfect for a break.

Getting there.

Drive to the Richtis Gorge parking area in Exo Mouliana (about 20 minutes east of Agios Nikolaos). You can start the full hike from the top and loop back.

Wrap up with a swim at Voulisma Beach.

After your hike, head to Voulisma Beach near Istro. Known for its shallow turquoise waters and fine white sand, it’s a comfortable spot to unwind. The sunset here is especially scenic, with golden light reflecting off the bay and surrounding cliffs.

Additional tips:

  • Wear sturdy shoes; the trail can be slippery in parts.
  • Bring water and snacks—there are no services inside the gorge.
  • If you’re ending at Voulisma, small cafes and beach bars are available nearby for drinks and light meals.

This itinerary blends active exploration with coastal relaxation—a balance that eastern Crete does especially well.
