Morning: Depart from Makry Gialos to Koufonisi
Koufonisi, also known as Lefki Island, is located off Crete’s southeastern coast and can only be reached by boat. Head to Makry Gialos Port in the morning-most boat tours depart between 9:30 and 10:00 AM and return in the late afternoon. The island is uninhabited, with no facilities, so pack water, sun protection, and snacks.
Explore a remote island of beaches and ruins
Once on Koufonisi, you’ll find white limestone cliffs, turquoise water, and a mix of sandy coves and rocky terrain. It was once a Roman outpost and still holds traces of ancient theaters, houses, and temples. Most boats dock for a few hours, allowing time to hike, swim, and relax. Some tours also circle the island to view caves and sea-carved cliffs.
Afternoon: Return and dine in Makry Gialos
Back on the mainland, head straight to Piperia at Pefki, just a few minutes from the Makyrgialos. This family-run seaside taverna is known for fresh grilled fish, octopus, and simple Cretan dishes, served with a view of the bay.
Practical tips:
- Boats are often weather-dependent. Check conditions or latest news.
- Koufonisi has little shade, so bring a hat or umbrella.
- Wear good shoes if you plan to explore beyond the beach.
This day offers a mix of island exploration, swimming, and local cuisine-a unique way to experience the more remote side of southeastern Crete.
