Understanding Speed Cameras in Crete
When driving around Crete, you’ll likely rely on Google Maps (most people say it works better than Waze and Apple Maps). Along the way, you’ll notice speed camera warnings popping up, especially on the main highway (E75/E90) in northern Crete.
But not all speed cameras are shown on Google Maps. There are many more, and it’s best to drive safely and stick to the speed limits.
Why Speed Limits Matter
Speeding is a leading cause of accidents in Crete. It’s dangerous for you and everyone on the road. The police take speeding very seriously, and breaking the rules can lead to hefty fines or points on your license.
Always stay within the speed limits, whether you see a camera or not. Safety first!
How Do Speed Cameras Work?
Speed cameras in Crete aren’t always active. They need film to work, just like an old-school camera. But film is expensive, so not every camera station is fully operational all the time. In addition, some cameras have been destroyed by locals.
Here’s how it works:
- The police rotate the films between different stations. This way, any camera could be active at any time.
- Cameras that work will capture the back of your vehicle if you’re speeding.
So, how can you tell if a camera is active? Look for a rectangular hole at the bottom half of the camera station. If you see a white, shiny circular device inside, the camera is working.
What to Watch For
Speed camera signs are always placed before a camera. You’ll notice two signs before reaching the station. After the second sign, the camera will be nearby, so pay attention.
