Eating in Crete: A Guide for Autoway’s Fellow Travallers!

Types of Eateries 

1.   Estiatorio

A step up in formality.

Menu: Likeattavernas, but frequently with a broaderassortment, including foods from other countries.

Ambiance: Moresophisticated, perfect for a romantic dinner or a specialevent.

 

2.   Taverna

The heart of Cretan cuisine. Casual, welcoming, and often family-run.

Specialties: Perfectly grilled fresh fish, juicy meats cooked over charcoal, and hearty, homemade meals like stuffed vegetables or moussaka.

Ambience: Exuberant and casual, ideal for a laid-back dinner with loved ones.

 

3.   Mezedhopoleio

A social dining experience.

Idea: Mezedhes, or shared dishes, are akin to tapas. To experience the range of flavors in Crete, get a selection. A mezedhopoleio that focuses on ouzo, a typical anise-flavored drink, is called an ouzerie. A variety of mezedhes are served with each round of ouzo.

 

4.   Kafeneio

A glimpse into old-world Greece.

Offers include modest nibbles, coffee, and alcohol.

Feel: Historically a place dominated by men, but becoming more inclusive.

Experience: A chance to take it leisurely, have a cup of coffee, and take in the local way of life.
